Councillor John Duff believes that the Post Office should contribute to the costs of keeping a post office facility in the town of Aberfeldy.
The shopkeeper who runs the present Post Office has been in talks with the company regarding moving the service to the other shop he owns in Aberfeldy. He has the backing of the Post Office, who have stated it is their ‘priority’ to safeguard their services in the locality in ‘the longer term.’
Commenting, local Councillor Duff said: "“The continuation of the Post Office facility in Aberfeldy is absolutely vital to the town and I encourage all residents and businesses to respond to the consultation as the Postmaster is giving up the shop in Dunkeld Street and wants to move the Post Office counter to his other premises in Bank Street.
“Disappointingly, the Post Office expects the Postmaster to bear all of the significant cost of undertaking the move and I have been working with Growbiz and Perth and Kinross Council to secure the assistance needed to make this happen. However, I do think that the Post Office should contribute to the costs of keeping this essential service available in the town, especially as we no longer have a bank.
“I have therefore written to Martin Roberts, the Chief Financial Officer for the Post Office, asking if they would help with the substantial costs involved. I hope that he might be able to help, and I am sure it would be greatly welcomed by the town.”
And Murdo Fraser MSP added: "“I know some residents, particularly, elderly people, depend on using postal services. It would be a huge blow to the local community if Aberfeldy were to lose its post office after no longer not having any banks in the town. I am sure that this plan to move the postal service will be warmly supported by the community and I would encourage them to take part in the public consultation as part of this process.”
