Murdo Fraser MSP is concerned at delays in transferring prisoners to court following the nation’s prison escort service facing criticism from a Sheriff.
The Scottish Conservative politician has called on the SNP Government to ensure GEOAmey deliver the required service.
Sheriff Robert More has ordered GEOAmey bosses to appear before him and explain persistent, lengthy and disruptive delays that are hampering justice being carried out. This follows repeated hold-ups of custodial prisoners at both Perth Sheriff Court and Forfar Sheriff Court.
Commenting, Murdo Fraser MSP, who represents the Mid Scotland and Fife region, said: “These shocking delays in prisoners being transferred into our courts for their trial are unacceptable and require a full explanation to those impacted.
“Thanks to SNP underfunding, our courts are already backlogged with tens of thousands of trials waiting to be heard. This latest setback will add further pain to victims waiting for their day to get justice.”
Mr Fraser continued: “The SNP Government agreed this contract with GEOAmey, and it is incumbent on them to ensure that GEOAmey are delivering the service the taxpayer has paid for.”
