Murdo Fraser MSP has welcomed newly installed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and highlighted the diversity in the Conservative Party.
The politician, who represents the Mid Scotland and Fife region, says the appointment should calm the uncertain economic situation that has prevailed for the past few weeks.
Commenting, Mr Fraser said: “Rishi Sunak is the right person to be the leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister, and I very much welcome his appointment. During the Covid pandemic he showed great business acumen when he was the Chancellor by introducing the Furlough scheme to help struggling businesses and also launched the inventive Eat Out to Help Out scheme.
“Thousands of businesses across Mid Scotland and Fife benefitted from the Furlough scheme and with his financial background, I’m sure he will know what is required to help people across the UK at this time.”
Mr Fraser continued: “It is also important to stress how diverse the Conservative Party is. Rishi Sunak is the first Hindu Prime Minister and we should remember that the first Jewish Prime Minister 150 years ago was a Conservative. The Cabinet assembled by the PM is very diverse, with politicians from many different backgrounds and I am proud this is so.
“I am proud that the Conservative Party puts these values into practice. We need to remember that in all this time, the Labour Party has only been led by a white man.”
