MSP’s Murdo Fraser and Liz Smith, alongside Perth City Cllr Heather Stewart toured Perth Harbour and met Harbour Master Capt. Nick Horner with Scottish Conservative MEP candidate Dr Ian Duncan.
The port of Perth has been an important centre for shipbuilding and trade since the medieval period and continues to play an important role in the local Perthshire economy.
If elected as an MEP, Dr Ian Duncan has vowed to reduce EU red tape, help small businesses, campaign to return elements of the social chapter to the UK and use his expertise to help the fishing industry in Scotland
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Perth Harbour has a long and distinguished history and continues to play an important role within the Perthshire economy. It was important to meet with the Capt. Nick Horner in order to gain a greater understanding of the opportunities and challenges currently facing the harbour.
“Local Conservatives wanted Ian Duncan to see this facility for himself, as someone who we hope will be speaking up for Scotland in the European Parliament from May.
Commenting Dr Ian Duncan said:
“As someone who worked for many years in the fishing industry I know only too well the value of an efficient and effective harbour, therefore it was good to meet the harbour master and learn more about this important port.
“Perth Harbour is a dynamic facility that has real potential and its over 10 years now since the harbour secured any European funding. If the harbour is to grow and develop more EU funds could make all the difference. Let’s make sure that Perth gets all the monies from Europe that it can.'
“Reducing EU bureaucracy and red tape will be vital in helping small businesses grow and create jobs. It is important that the EU continues to support Scottish businesses particularly those in rural areas and if elected this May I will make it my job to speak up for Scottish residents and businesses.”
