Conservative Councillor for the Carse of Gowrie Ward, Angus Forbes, has said he is “quietly confident” that the temporary 20mph zone in Errol will be made permanent.
Errol was chosen as one of five sites across Perth and Kinross Council area to trial 20mph speed limits to allow local authority traffic officers to understand what would influence driver behaviour and to shape policy making for future requests for that speed limit.
Commenting, Councillor Forbes said: “I was delighted to see that the council traffic officers have proposed that all 20mph zones used in the trial remain as permanent sites. I ran a survey with local residents and over 80% were in favour of keeping both the limit and the speed cushions, which were put in place as part of the trial.
“The proposals now go to Perth and Kinross Council’s Environment and Infrastructure Committee, but with such clear community support and a recommendation from council officers, I am quietly confident the proposal to keep the sites in place will be passed by members.”
Councillor Forbes continued: “The results of the trial have shown us that 20mph limits on their own make just marginal differences to driver speed, but once you introduce physical measures alongside them then you start to see speeds coming down.
“The one intervention that did make a difference was having the Police running speed checks in the town but sadly Police Scotland don’t have the resources to be everywhere. Residents are in favour of the 20mph speed zones and want them to stay, so hopefully that can be agreed next week.”
