Scottish Conservatives are keen to have funding used for additional parking in Pitlochry.
A survey of local residents’ views on more parking for the Highland Perthshire town was delayed due to the pandemic, thus putting plans on hold, but it is hoped some action can now take place to address the parking situation in the town.
Commenting, John Duff, who represents the Highland Ward for the Scottish Conservatives, said: “Back in 2018, the Council allocated £150,000 of funding for additional car parking in Pitlochry and since then Provost McDade and I have been actively trying to identify suitable space in the town centre to utilise this funding. However, it was decided that a parking survey was needed to establish the parking situation in the town first. Unfortunately, Covid interrupted the process and it has not been possible to complete the survey until late last year, putting the funding on hold sadly.
“I am aware of local concerns regarding some of the figures produced in the report and have asked officers to work with the company which undertook the survey to establish the accuracy of the data and report back. Whatever the outcome, I am keen that we try to move forward and use this funding for additional parking as originally envisaged.”
And Murdo Fraser MSP, who represents the Mid Scotland and Fife region for the Scottish Conservatives, added: “I have been aware for years of issues with parking in Pitlochry, particularly during the peak tourist season, and would be supportive of any moves to increase parking provision. Pitlochry has always been a popular destination for visitors and tourists so it is only right that there is adequate parking provision in the town.
“There has been a suggestion of providing bigger parking spaces but I personally feel that if you increase the size of the spaces then you would reduce the number available so I’m not keen on that.”
