Murdo Fraser MSP has highlighted the importance of people getting behind the “vital” Save St John’s Kirk of Perth appeal.
The Scottish Conservative politician was commenting following an event held recently to mark the launch of the £4 million appeal, which he attended.
The historic building has a leaky spire and belfry and decaying masonry, and its roof is also deteriorating and the stained-glass window casings are compromised.
Commenting, Mr Fraser said: “The historic Church has seen 900 years of worship and its iconic spire dominates the Perth skyline. During its time, St John’s Kirk of Perth has hosted Royal and historic occasions, as well as marriages, christenings, funerals and civic and public events - such is its important role to the local community and beyond.
“It is located in the heart of Perth and is one of the city’s main tourist attractions. With the multi-million-pound development of Perth City Hall nearing its completion, it is even more essential that funds are found to protect this historic building, which sits beside the City Hall, as both venues are bound to attract visitors to the city.
“The Kirk session and the Trust of St John’s Kirk of Perth have financed emergency repairs until now, but it is now time to widen the appeal. Talks have taken place with key stakeholders, with an outline strategy being developed alongside a full business plan for the Kirk, which is set to be finalised by the end of this year.”
Mr Fraser continued: “I am a history buff and recognise that we need to preserve the historical significance of St John’s Kirk while also ensuring its future. I would encourage residents to back me and get behind this appeal to save the Kirk.
“We need to ensure that this historic building, central to both Perth and Scottish Reformation history, is saved for future generations. I am sure the good people of Perth will support the appeal. Donations can be made online and there are donation forms available in the church.”
